Copywriting is the act of officially through legal and government channels of protecting the work that you produce to claim ownership of the material and protect your property. It's important though to understand what is and is not copyrighted. Works that are published before 1923 and works that were published between 1923 and 1978 are allowed for use. Works that are granted free persimmon for use by the owner can also be used.
You can use material that falls under the fair use doctrine and wont need persimmon for its usage. This use was created for people to use for news, comedy, parody and research. The nature of the copyrighted work. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole. The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. Educators follow a set of rules as well. A chapter from a book, poem under 250 words, articles or essays under 2500 words, single chart, graph etc. You can't make multiple copies or use them over and over again. Similar rules apply to music and TV. Music can only be copied for emergency use and tv can be shown if downloaded properly and recorded in a legal manner.
It's important to remember the internet is not a public domain, you can't just go ahead and use whatever is out there. A treaty is used to produce this property in the Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works. This is applied across countries and servers. Software falls under different categories as well and educators can use them if they follow the rules and the intentions it was meant for. Commercial software, Freeware and shareware. Chances are you won't get sued if you use somonelses photo unless you are earning economic product from it. Being face to face with you students helps get through some of the hump of what you can and can't use so invest in a projector. Using the service or material for educational purposes and what it's meant for. Overall teachers push the limits of what they use and take full advantage to help educate students for less. Remember though don't make a profit from this you can be held responsible still and don't just steal material. Follow the guidelines posted and make sure you do things ethically. Teach your students what's right and wrong and how to follow these best practices.
